The practice exam test: how to take it and score yourself against the real thresholds
3 min read

A practice test is only useful if you take it under exam conditions and score it against the real rule. A total like "so many points out of 80" tells you nothing here: in the exam, each part and each level band is counted separately.
This guide covers how to prepare for the attempt, how to take it and how to read your result. With a worked example.
Before you start
- Exam timing. 90 minutes for reading and writing, then straight after, 25 minutes for listening. Set your timer in advance.
- A computer, not paper. Both morning parts of the exam are electronic, so type on a keyboard with Lithuanian letters.
- Headphones for listening. In the exam you listen through headphones.
- No dictionary and no breaks. Otherwise the result shows the dictionary's level, not yours.
Take the test
Our practice tests contain all three parts: reading and writing, listening and speaking. The tasks are our own, built on the official topic areas and task types; they do not reproduce official exam material.
How to score yourself: count by band
Write down your points for each level band separately and compare them with the thresholds:
| Part | A1 level | A2 level |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and writing | 13 or more out of 22 (tasks 1–4) | 17 or more out of 28 (tasks 5–9) |
| Listening | 6 or more out of 10 (tasks 1–2) | 6 or more out of 10 (tasks 3–4) |
| Speaking | 5 or more out of 10, and at least two situations with 2 points each | 6 or more out of 10, and at least 5 points in total from two situations |
In each part, A2 only counts once A1 has been reached. The final result is A2 only when A2 has been reached in all three parts.
Example: how to read a result
Say that after your attempt you have these points:
| Part | Points | Result for the part |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and writing | A1 band 18 of 22, A2 band 19 of 28 | A2 |
| Listening | A1 band 7 of 10, A2 band 5 of 10 | A1 |
| Speaking | situations 2 + 2 + 2, interviewing examiner 1, total 7 | A1 |
In total that is 18 + 19 + 7 + 5 + 7 = 56 points out of 80, which looks quite good. But the final result would be A1, not A2:
- the listening A2 band is one point short: 5, where 6 is needed;
- speaking has 7 points, but the two best situations give only 2 + 2 = 4, while A2 needs 5.
So this person does not need to "study more in general", but very specific things: listening tasks 3–4 and one strong speaking situation.
What to do with your result
- Find your weakest band. That band, not the total, decides your final result.
- Train exactly that band for a week or two.
- Take a second test — the second set has different tasks — and compare the bands, not the totals.
You can practise writing and speaking with feedback. The full scoring rule with official examples is described separately: How the exam is scored: the A2 threshold, part by part.
